About Steve Crandell

America's maritime history is dramatically documented with Steve Crandell’s unique collection of restored maritime photographs, paintings and etchings. The images of the ships that coursed from New England around ‘the horn’ to San Francisco, as well as lumber schooners, whaling vessels and Old Navy ships have been carefully restored and digitized.

This one-of-a-kind collection is for all who are fascinated with America’s maritime history. This collection will serve as a reference for the serious historian as well as offering enjoyment to anyone viewing these fine art prints. Many of the images have been hand tinted using modern digital technology.

Steve Crandell was born in New England and began working on the docs at the age of thirteen, taking to the sea as a fisherman at the age of sixteen. His sea travels took him to the Gulf of Mexico, South American and the West Coast of the United States, during which, he became a professional diver and started a maritime salvage company.

Upon settling on the West Coast Crandell opened a maritime supply store and began to design and market maritime products. Over time Crandell established himself as an international authority in the trade of maritime antiquities with hi office located on Union Square in San Francisco.

Over thirty five years as an appraiser and maritime antiquities dealer he built a collection of original photographs, paintings and etchings of historic sail and steam vessels. It has become Crandell’s lifetime ambition to restore the array of images he had obtained and share them with future generations. To satisfy his goals Crandell set out to master the technology necessary to restore and print the images in a fine art manner.

All images are Giclee printed on an Epson 9880, 44" printer, using archival pigments. All images are printed on one of three mediums: Epson Matt 50+ year archival paper, Sommerset 100% rag 100+ year archival paper, or canvas.
